Haikou is developing the dendrobium industry for rural revitalization

In recent years, local governments in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan province, have placed significant emphasis on the development of the dendrobium industry. In 2023, the approval of the Dendrobium Modern Agricultural Industrial Park in Xiuying District marked a major step forward. The Government of Shishan Town, where the industrial park is situated, has pioneered various development models for dendrobium, integrating other industries with high standards. As a result, production, processing, sales, tourism, research, and healthcare applications involving dendrobium are now taking shape, becoming key drivers of rural revitalization and economic growth in the region.

Dendrobium, a traditional and valuable Chinese medicinal herb, thrives in Haikou’s unique volcanic landscape. The Haikou Yangshan volcanic landform, created by volcanic eruptions 20,000 years ago, enriched the area with minerals and trace elements from deep within the earth. This has provided an ideal environment for the natural growth of dendrobium, which boasts distinctive qualities and significant market potential. The plants grow atop the misty peaks, and in traditional Chinese culture, such prime locations allow dendrobium to draw on theVital Force of Heaven and Earth. With its pristine growth conditions, tropical marine monsoon climate, and optimal latitude (19°-20° north), this area has become renowned for producingdendrobium, which is considered one of southern China's most valuable medicinal herbs and known as the"immortal grass." Ancient medical texts extensively document the uses of dendrobium, which is employed in treating ailments of the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys, with hundreds of prescriptions incorporating it. It has long been revered in Chinese pharmacopeias as the leading herb among the“Nine Immortal Grasses of Chinese Medicine.”

In Haikou, Hainan Sicheng Group stands out as a key player in the dendrobium industry in Shicha Village. The company has embraced a comprehensive development strategy that includes one park, two bases, three leading sectors, and four development areas. This approach has allowed Sicheng Group to establish a wide-ranging business model that encompasses supply chain management, the health industry, tourism, efficient ecological agriculture, online operations, e-commerce, international trade, and international legal affairs. The company has made significant strides in developing dendrobium products and expanding its market presence.

In addition, Sicheng Group has partnered with Shengrong Biotechnology, a leading company in dendrobium seedling cultivation, to advance core technologies in seedling breeding, ecological cultivation, and product processing. This collaboration has led to the successful cultivation and domestication of approximately 140 million dendrobium seedlings, with annual sales of dendrobium-based products reaching 9.48 million yuan (about 130 million US dollars). These efforts have further fueled the industrialization of dendrobium, propelling the industry toward high-quality, sustainable growth.
